2021 Swantiki
Our Scout unit had a successful Swantiki this year. The annual Swantiki event was organized by Scouts WA.
Starting bright and early at 7 am, they started building their raft out of empty barrels and staves (wooden sticks) tying them together with nothing but ropes and good ol'knots. Our 12 Scouts were divided into 2 teams, each building their own raft. After two and half hours of team work, they were happy with their raft and is ready for the ultimate test!
Launching the raft into the Swan River was the test to see if the barrels stay together. Loose knots tend to slip when they get wet, then you add 6 youths, that is when rafts will "open up" swallowing the youths.. not a sight that leaders want to see. Fortunately, our rafts were able to set off without any mishaps.
Using their home-made paddles, they raced with 300 Scouts from other groups to complete a course, with 4 activity stations to stop at along the way. Within 2 hours, they paddled their way back to the finishing line, greeting their leaders with tired but happy faces.
Additionally, leaders are also extremely proud in that the Scout Unit pitched in to ensure one of their own (whom have additional needs) was included and participated safely through out the activity. It was heart warming to see the kindness and respect given. Yes, it did take them longer to complete raft building but they did it as a team and nobody was left behind. A true display of Scouting values!
We are sure this valuable experience has taught them to overcome obstacles, build teamwork, challenge their physical strength and above all, "Believe in myself". We had a lot of fun in the process and ia already planning for next year!
